Contemporary interactive teaching and learning materials are either only usable with a certain technology, like interactive whiteboards or tablets, or bound to a certain provider software. Until now there has only been a small number of materials available that allow synchronous, collaborative work at different locations on a shared task, independent from the technology used. Against the background of this the multilateral project, INTACT (Interactive Teaching materials Across Culture and Technology) develops interactive teaching and learning materials for bilingual education in different subjects, evaluates them and provides them on an online platform.

Interactive, bilingual resources for various subjects will be created during the project’s timetable. Based on the competencies participants offer (e.g. special branches of and didactical knowledge related to pupils’ age level), work on the project will occur for all of the following subject areas: mathematics, social science and environment. A wide spectrum of cooperation for schools through communication and collaborative work with the use of interactive materials on regional, national, and international levels will be achieved (see Fig. 2). International contact with other school classrooms will hopefully foster a strengthening of social and cultural competencies among learners through INTACT. For this reason, the materials will be designed in such a way that pupils in different schools and countries can simultaneously work on the same resources together. If the learners from different countries need to come together to solve a problem, the language most commonly understood would be English. This bilingual instruction assists pupils in learning and practising English as a foreign language by having them discuss specific topics in the foreign language with other pupils of English as a foreign language. Since English is the most common shared language amongst the project partners, the materials will be initially written in the English language and prepared for the use in bilingual instruction, according to the mother tongue of the project partners. This will be achieved particularly through the glossary and references that will correspond to the suggested age level’s ability level. In order to ensure that using the interactive technology is independent from any particular technology, it will be written with HTML 5. In this way, an independence from the device manufacturers’ authoring tools can be guaranteed.

The interactive teaching materials are available at the online platform.

In order that two locations can simultaneously work on one set of materials, the technical implementation of an online platform is absolutely necessary. This online platform will be developed during the project. Within the working group 3, of INTACT, the requirements and use cases of the online platform will be addressed. Working together with an external company, the group shall be able to create a solution design for the requirements and use cases so that, based on the solution, proposals for the implementation of the platform can be decided on. After the proposals have been selected, the chosen external company’s proposed specifications will be implemented. The company and pilot schools will test the online platform after this implementation and revise the platform as necessary regarding its functionality.
