Complutense University was founded by Cardinal Cisneros in the ancient town of Complutum, the present day Alcalá de Henares, in 1499. It began with only five Faculties (Arts and Philosophy, Theology, Canon Law, Letters and Medicine). Today, in 2013, being the largest university in Spain, Complutense offers 292 official titles and 158 own degrees. During the 2011–2012 academic year the university recorded an enrolment of 84.985 students.
Complutense currently has inter-institutional agreements with many universities around the word. The location, Campus in Moncloa, north west of Madrid, houses two universities –Complutense and Polytechnic, as well as research centers (CSIC, CIEMAT and INIA), fostering synergies in higher education, research and innovation. Taking advantage of this unique environment, the project “Moncloa Campus of excellence” is being developed as a collaborative agreement between the integrating institutions, to achieve scientific excellence and internationalization and to guarantee connectivity and integration.
